Youth Media folks brainstorm about what works in youth oriented access programs ACMNE November 2004

Viewpoint: For success with the participants
  • sketch before you paint (start with projects under 2 minutes with music or voice over)
  • provide for youth space - in the facility, on the cablecast schedule
  • summer programs are better from 9-noon, afterschool work best with drop in scedules
  • talent dependent projects run the risk of failure because of schedules could be longer than talent availability; multi-task and share responsibilities
  • work with guidelines rather than rigid steps
  • group activities including watching youth produced work is critical
  • set a screening date early in the project - motivation

Viewpont: Education Authorities or Funding Sources
  • align program with educational content goals
  • use rubrics for youth to review other youths work and coordinators to assess youth achievement
  • incorporate lessons learned in celebration activity
  • build sustainable, replicatable programs

  • Sample Youth Productions - video streaming sites
